Invicta Dynamics survived a nervy finish to beat Milton Keynes Falcons B 5-4 on Saturday 28th February, with Charlotte Davenport-Jeffery delivering a match-winning hat-trick — including a crucial shorthanded goal — to see her side over the line.
It wasn't always pretty. Dynamics led for much of the game but were hauled back to 3-3 early in the third period before Davenport-Jeffery took matters into her own hands. The Falcons pulled their goalkeeper in the dying seconds, scored to make it 5-4, and called a timeout with 44 seconds left. Dynamics held on.
A scrappy but competitive first period
The opening period was more about setting the tone than scoring goals — though Dynamics did manage to find the net once. Laura Podstawka converted on the power play at 10:36, assisted by Heidi Steggles, to give Invicta an early lead after Natalie Miles-Brown had been penalised for tripping.
It wasn't without controversy. Dynamics were also hit with a bench penalty for too many players on the ice at 13:31, and Melissa Prowse was called for hooking before the period was out. Invicta led 1-0 after twenty minutes, but it felt far from settled.
Dynamics build a lead — then the Falcons hit back
The second period looked like it might put the game to bed. Freya McCune doubled Invicta's advantage at 23:25, with Heidi Steggles and Davenport-Jeffery combining to set her up. Dynamics were in control and looking comfortable.
Then Milton Keynes responded. Erin Russell pulled one back at 30:27 — assisted by Lucy Young — and suddenly the Falcons had something to work with. Leia Ferrier was penalised for cross-checking at 39:58, though MK were unable to convert the opportunity. Going into the second break, Invicta still led 2-1, but the Falcons had shown they weren't going quietly.
The third period was where this match came alive.
Lucy Young levelled things up for MK at 45:04, assisted by Freya Poole, to make it 2-2. It was the Falcons' best spell of the game, and with momentum behind them the match was suddenly wide open.
Davenport-Jeffery's response was immediate and quite brilliant. Just over two minutes later, with Dynamics killing a penalty — Tammy Phipps had been called for tripping at 46:14 — she scored shorthanded at 47:44. Unassisted. Against the run of play. 3-2 Invicta.
Dynamics called a timeout at 51:26, just as Erin Russell made it 3-3 with an unassisted goal, and clearly used the pause to refocus. It worked. Davenport-Jeffery scored again at 52:03 — her second of the period, fourth of the night — to restore the lead, and completed her hat-trick at 56:38 to make it 5-3.
MK refused to fold. Eva Lyon converted at 57:54 — assisted by Freya Poole and Farida Ibrahim — to make it 5-4, and the Falcons pulled their goalkeeper with just over a minute left. A timeout at 59:16 added to the tension. But Dynamics defended resolutely and saw it out.
Players of the Match
Both sides were recognised after the final buzzer. **Charlotte Davenport-Jeffery** took the honour for Invicta — three goals, a key assist, and the shorthanded strike that ultimately proved the difference. For MK Falcons B, **Erin Russell** was rewarded for a battling two-goal display that kept her side in the hunt until the very end.
A hard-fought win and a very different kind of performance from Invicta compared to their demolition of Cambridge Kodiaks B last week. This one required character as much as quality — and they showed both. Davenport-Jeffery's shorthanded goal was the turning point; her hat-trick was the foundation.
For Milton Keynes Falcons B, there will be real positives to take. Russell's two goals and the Falcons' refusal to give up until the final buzzer showed a team with plenty of fight.
