If last time out was special, this was something else entirely. Invicta Dynamics beat Milton Keynes Falcons B 7-2 on Sunday, with Charlotte Davenport-Jeffery and Chelsea Meaney both registering hat-tricks in the same match - a feat remarkable enough on its own, made all the more extraordinary by the fact that three of Invicta's seven goals came while they were shorthanded.
Davenport-Jeffery, named joint Player of the Match alongside MK Falcons B's Caitlin Barraclough, finished with three goals - two of them shorthanded - and two assists for five points. Meaney matched her point for point: three goals, two assists, five points, and a shorthanded hat-trick goal of her own in a second period that simply got away from the visitors.
Falcons B make a bright start
Milton Keynes Falcons B made the better opening. Barraclough put them ahead at 3:33, converting from Eva Lyon's feed to give the visitors a lead they might have built on. They couldn't. Invicta struck twice in under two minutes: Meaney levelled at 9:57 with Robyn Mapp assisting, and Laura Podstawka made it 2-1 at 11:28 from Davenport-Jeffery's pass. A MKF penalty for Yvie Jordan late in the period went unpunished, and Invicta went into the first intermission 2-1 ahead.
Second period: extraordinary doesn't cover it
The second period was where this match became something to remember.
Meaney extended the lead at 23:43, assisted by Davenport-Jeffery, to make it 3-1 - but MK Falcons B responded almost immediately, Jessica Green pulling one back at 24:02 to make it 3-2. For a moment it felt as if the visitors might mount a challenge.
They couldn't. What followed was a six-minute passage that produced four Invicta goals, all while the Dynamics were managing penalties of their own.
Davenport-Jeffery made it 4-2 at 29:44, Meaney providing the assist. Almost immediately, Laura Podstawka was penalised for Unsportsmanlike Conduct at 30:20 - and Invicta, shorthanded, promptly scored again. Davenport-Jeffery converted from Meaney's feed at 30:46, a shorthanded goal that brought the score to 5-2.
Then Freya McCune went to the box for tripping at 34:03, and Meaney - killing a second consecutive penalty - scored unassisted at 34:40 to complete her hat-trick. Three shorthanded goals in less than five minutes of clock time, and Invicta led 6-2.
The fireworks weren't quite finished. A chaotic penalty sequence at 35:25 saw Meaney pick up a five-minute major for Checking from Behind - a serious infraction that will likely be reviewed - while two MK Falcons B players were also penalised simultaneously. Invicta subsequently picked up a bench minor for Too Many on Ice at 37:09, and Falcons B were called for Delay of Game at 37:25. Through it all, with Invicta's bench minor running, Davenport-Jeffery completed her own hat-trick at 38:35 - scoring unassisted while shorthanded to make it 7-2.
The third period was goalless, Invicta content to see the match out comfortably.
The bigger picture
Two simultaneous hat-tricks in the same women's hockey match is a genuinely rare achievement. That both were partly built on shorthanded goals - Davenport-Jeffery with two, Meaney with one - gives this performance a quality that goes well beyond the scoreline.
Charlotte Davenport-Jeffery's Player of the Match award was richly deserved. Caitlin Barraclough's recognition for MK Falcons B was equally fair - she scored the opener, battled throughout a difficult afternoon, and was one of the few visiting players who consistently competed.
