Chelsea Meaney was at the centre of everything on Saturday as Invicta Dynamics ran out convincing 5-1 winners against Bristol Huskies B. The forward finished with four goals and an assist for five points - a performance that would have been the story of any match, regardless of the level.

What made it particularly remarkable was the manner in which Meaney built her tally. Two of her goals came shorthanded - scored while Invicta were killing penalties - a feat that speaks to both her individual quality and the effectiveness of Invicta's penalty kill throughout the afternoon.

A shorthanded statement

The first period set the tone. Invicta found themselves in the sin bin twice in the opening frame, with Leia Ferrier called for too many skaters on the ice and Laura Podstawka penalised for a bodycheck. Bristol had chances to make their power plays count, but it was Invicta who scored - Meaney picking up the puck and finishing unassisted at 15:26 to give her side a 1-0 lead against the run of play.

It was exactly the kind of moment that shifts a match. Invicta went to the first intermission a goal up despite spending significant time shorthanded.

More of the same in the second

The second period followed a similar pattern. Invicta conceded another penalty - Podstawka back in the box for interference - and again found themselves killing. Again, it was Meaney who punished the situation rather than survived it: a second shorthanded goal, unassisted once more, at 31:19 to make it 2-0.

That effort alone would have made the night's highlights. Two shorthanded goals in the same game - both unassisted, both when Invicta were a skater down - is a rare feat at any level of the game.

Hat-trick and beyond

The third period brought no let-up. Meaney completed her hat-trick at 40:27 - this time at even strength, Heidi Steggles picking up the assist - and added a fourth just under seven minutes later, Steggles again the provider. Bristol's Tanja Tucker collected back-to-back delay of game penalties at 40:58 to compound her side's frustration, finishing the match with six penalty minutes.

Bristol did get a goal back through Bethany Worth on the power play at 49:54, Emily Crudgington assisting, but it was brief consolation. Freya McCune put the gloss on the scoreline with Invicta's fifth in the final three minutes, set up by Natalie Green and Meaney - the latter turning provider to round off a five-point afternoon.

The joint players of the match were Orla Golden for Bristol Huskies B and Melissa Prowse for Invicta Dynamics.
