Cardiff Devils returned to winning ways with a composed 3-0 home victory over Dundee Stars at the Vindico Arena on Saturday evening, Christian Stoever keeping a clean sheet as the Devils scored all three goals in the first two periods and coasted through a goalless third. Kristoff Kontos assisted two of the three goals, continuing his role as Cardiff's primary creative force, and Dundee's frustration boiled over late with Matthew Boudens picking up a 10-minute misconduct for abuse of officials at 34:44.

For Cardiff — who came in with a W, L, L, W, L pattern from their last five — this is a composed response following last weekend's 7-2 home defeat to Nottingham. For Dundee, a fourth defeat in five and a fifth in their last six across all competitions, the Stars' struggles on the road continue.

Cardiff take charge in the first period

Sanford opened the scoring at 15:26 from Kontos' assist, and Barrow doubled the lead two minutes later at 17:29 — Kontos and Richardson assisting — to give Cardiff a 2-0 cushion heading into the first break. Schoonbaert was penalised twice at 17:35 for cross-checking and roughing, giving Cardiff a four-minute power play, but the goals had already arrived; Caponi was then penalised for roughing at 19:35 to end the period on a feisty note.

The two goals in 123 seconds gave Cardiff exactly the platform they needed. Stoever in the Cardiff goal was rarely threatened in the first period.

Perlini seals it in the second

The second period was more competitive but the outcome never looked in doubt. Desouza was penalised for high sticking at 20:25, and Caponi for interference at 26:13, before Perlini scored the third at 24:22 — Mosey and Brandt assisting — to give Cardiff a three-goal lead. Yamamoto's tripping penalty and Boudens' abuse of officials misconduct at 34:44 gave Dundee a turbulent end to the period and, combined with the two-goal penalty situation before it, spoke to a visiting side losing their composure.

Third period — Cardiff manage it, Dundee offer little

The third period produced no goals and only two Cardiff penalties — Sanford for interference at 49:51 and Olischefski for tripping at 52:21 — both of which Dundee could not convert. Stoever ended the match with a clean sheet, his first of the season at the Vindico Arena, and Cardiff controlled the final twenty minutes without significant alarm.

Kruse in the Dundee goal conceded three goals before the second intermission and had little support from his skaters in the final period when Cardiff were happy to slow the game down and manage the result. Dundee's failure to convert any of the multiple power play chances they received — particularly the four-minute advantage in the first period — is a damaging feature of a side that cannot afford to give away points in the final weeks of the regular season.

Kontos and Cardiff's creative core

Kontos' two assists bring his contributions across the recent Cardiff fixtures to a consistently productive level. He has now assisted multiple goals in back-to-back home matches and his partnership with Sanford and Barrow in the first period produced both of Cardiff's opening goals inside three minutes. The Brandt connection — assisting on Perlini's third — continues to offer a secondary creative thread that makes Cardiff's attack difficult to plan against.
