Sheffield Steelers produced a dominant display to beat Manchester Storm 6–0 in their EIHL play-off semifinal on Saturday evening, with a devastating final period that left the Storm with a mountain to climb in the tie.
The Steelers were disciplined, clinical, and — when it mattered most — ruthless. Three power-play goals in the third period, two of them in the final 96 seconds after Manchester self-destructed with a pair of late penalties, turned a solid win into something emphatic.
A controlled opening
It took Sheffield just over twelve minutes to break the deadlock. Brady Gilmour was sent to the penalty box for hooking, and Ryan Tait made Manchester pay immediately — finishing from Dominic Cormier's feed nine seconds after the infraction was called. It was a composed, professional opener from the Steelers, and it set the tone for everything that followed.
The first period ended 1–0 with Sheffield comfortable. Manchester had created little and Drew DeRidder in the Storm goal had not been seriously tested.
Heard puts Steelers in control
The second period was quieter in terms of goals, but Mitchell Heard's effort at 31:08 was well worked — Mitchell Balmas and Mikko Juusola combining to release him, and Heard finishing cleanly to make it 2–0. Manchester had no answer, and their recent form — four defeats in their last five games heading into the match — was beginning to tell.
Third period: Steelers put the tie to bed
The third period is where this game — and arguably the tie — was decided.
Evan Jasper scored unassisted at 48:19 to make it 3–0 and effectively extinguish any realistic hope of a Storm comeback. A Tait power-play goal at 54:42, again set up by Balmas and Juusola, stretched the lead to four.
Then Manchester lost their composure entirely. At 57:49, Bradley Jenion was called for kneeing — a five-minute major — and Rais Francis immediately compounded the damage with a 10-minute misconduct for abuse of officials. With the Storm down to four skaters and the penalty clock running deep, Sheffield helped themselves to two more. Heard tucked in unassisted at 58:24 for his second of the night, and Stephen Harper added a sixth with 56 seconds left, assisted by Kevin Tansey.
Six goals. A clean sheet. A statement result.
What it means
A 6–0 win in a play-off semifinal leaves Sheffield Steelers in an extremely strong position in the tie. Manchester Storm will need to produce something extraordinary in the second leg to advance. The Storm's season has been stuttering for weeks — this will do nothing to change that mood.
For Sheffield, Matthew Greenfield barely broke a sweat at the other end, and the Tait-Balmas-Juusola combination will have the Steelers' supporters daring to dream of a place in the final.
