Sheffield Steelers claimed a hard-fought 3-1 away win at Dundee Ice Arena on Friday evening in a match defined by defensive resilience, two dramatic coach's challenges in the third period, and Dominic Cormier's decisive goal at 56:03 breaking a 42-minute stalemate. Dowd's unassisted empty netter at 59:06 sealed it, and Sheffield head into the weekend on W, L, L, L, W — a result that halts what had been a poor run and confirms they can still grind out results on the road.
For Dundee, who had won a shootout in their last outing but lost their previous four in regulation, this is another defeat against a side they were competitive with for long stretches. The coach's challenges — one successful for each side — added controversy and tension to a third period that had been decided by fine margins.
Sheffield take the lead — Dundee level before the break
Southorn gave Sheffield the lead at 7:23 — Heard and Ritchie assisting — before Curran equalised for Dundee at 14:06 from McBean's assist to level at 1-1. The first period ended all square, with Kruse producing a strong save at both ends. Unusually, Kruse himself was penalised for tripping at 35:37 in the second period — goalkeeper penalties are rare at any level — but Sheffield were unable to convert the resulting power play.
The second period was goalless. Both sides had opportunities, neither could convert. The match headed into the final period all square at 1-1.
Two coach's challenges, then Cormier breaks the deadlock
The third period was where the match found its drama. At 51:27, Dundee challenged a Sheffield goal for goaltender interference — and it was upheld. No goal. Dundee had their reprieve. Sheffield challenged a Dundee goal at 53:10 for the same offence — and that too was disallowed. Both sides had now lost a goal to video review within two minutes of each other, and the match remained 1-1.
Harper was penalised for slashing at 51:27, giving Dundee a power play they couldn't convert. Then Cormier finally broke the deadlock at 56:03 from Harper and Tait's assists — the irony of Harper contributing an assist after his penalty noteworthy — to give Sheffield a 2-1 lead with four minutes left.
Dundee called their timeout at 58:33 and pulled Kruse for an extra skater immediately after. They pushed hard but couldn't find the equaliser, and Dowd scored the empty net at 59:06 unassisted — Kruse coming back on at the same moment — to seal the 3-1 result.
McAdam and the Sheffield defensive effort
Eamon McAdam started in goal for Sheffield and had an excellent evening — conceding only Curran's well-worked equaliser in the first period and keeping Dundee out entirely across the second and third. His saves during the third period's most tense passages, particularly after the two disallowed goals had ratcheted up the atmosphere, were the platform on which Sheffield's late goals were built.
