Nottingham Panthers produced a composed and resilient performance to beat Sheffield Steelers 2-4 at a packed Utilita Arena on Saturday evening, 9,389 in attendance for one of the most significant EIHL fixtures of the weekend. Sheffield led 1-0 after the first period and pulled it back to 2-3 in the third, but Nottingham's bench picked up both a too many men minor and a 20-minute abuse of officials misconduct at 55:33 and still held on — Stridsberg's empty net goal at 59:08 putting the result beyond doubt with 52 seconds remaining.
It is Nottingham's fourth win from five and moves them further clear in their title challenge. For Sheffield — who had won their last three coming in and were bidding for a fourth in front of their biggest home crowd of the season — it is a deflating result at the worst possible moment.
Sheffield lead — Nottingham hit back twice in the second
Sheffield dominated the first period without running away with it. Huttula scored at 10:54 from Jasper and Dowd, and the home side led 1-0 at the break after Nottingham's Volcan was penalised for cross-checking at 11:23 which Sheffield couldn't convert. Pearson had been penalised for tripping at 4:42 earlier without consequence.
The second period belonged entirely to Nottingham. Armour equalised at 21:11 — Harris and Doherty assisting — and Lemos put the Panthers ahead at 31:01 from Henbrant and Tetlow to make it 1-2. Offsetting roughing calls on Tremblay (SHE) and Doherty (NOT) at 33:56 cancelled each other out and the second period ended with Nottingham leading and Sheffield needing a response.
Marcinew makes it three — Jasper gives Sheffield hope — Nottingham's bench drama
Marcinew added a third for Nottingham at 40:57 from Spencer's assist, giving the Panthers a two-goal cushion at the second break. Jasper pulled one back for Sheffield at 50:54 — Diffley and Tait assisting — to make it 2-3 and set up a tense final ten minutes at the Utilita Arena.
Then came the most extraordinary sequence of the match. At 55:33, Nottingham's bench were called for two simultaneous penalties — a bench minor for too many men and a 20-minute match penalty for abuse of officials. Sheffield had a power play, the crowd roaring, with four and a half minutes to play. They could not convert it. The two minutes expired. Sheffield pulled McAdam at 59:00 for an extra skater. Stridsberg scored the empty net at 59:08 unassisted — McAdam came back on at the same moment — and the result was confirmed.
The bench misconduct will be reviewed by the EIHL. Winning despite receiving both a too many men penalty and a 20-minute misconduct in the same action, and still holding out for the win, is a testament to Nottingham's defensive composure in the most hostile of atmospheres.
The attendance and its meaning
9,389 at Utilita Arena is one of the largest attendances of the EIHL season and reflects the significance of this fixture in the title race. Sheffield's three-game winning run had built genuine momentum at home, and the crowd was fully invested from the first minute. That Nottingham won in this environment, coming from behind, surviving the bench drama, and holding on with 52 seconds of an empty net, is a result that sends a clear message about where this title race is headed.
Greenfield started in net for Sheffield, McAdam came on for the final seconds. Grande started for Nottingham and had an impressive evening — his saves when Sheffield pushed hardest in the third period were the difference.
