Dundee Stars beat Sheffield Steelers 5-6 in overtime at the Utilita Arena on Saturday evening in one of the most dramatic and chaotic EIHL matches of the season, Otto Nieminen scoring the overtime winner at 63:51 to settle a match that had swung violently between both sides across four periods and a mass brawl. Seven Sheffield goals and five Dundee goals across 63 minutes and 51 seconds, an extraordinary fight sequence at 53:38 that saw Heard accumulate four simultaneous Sheffield penalties, and Dundee coming away with two points against all expectation from a team arriving on five consecutive defeats.
For Sheffield — who had led 2-1 and then rallied from 2-4 down to lead 5-4 — this is a gut-punch loss that ends a weekend on W, L for their pair of home matches. For Dundee, two points from a match they led for over half of regulation is a remarkable result that gives genuine encouragement after a grim run.
The remarkable first period — four Dundee goals from 2-1 down
Sheffield took an early lead through Southorn at 4:38 from Juusola and Diffley. Yamamoto equalised for Dundee at 7:37 before Harper restored Sheffield's lead at 11:39 from Heard and Tait — 2-1 to the home side and the match seemingly under control.
Then Dundee scored four times. Naas levelled at 12:32 from Yamamoto. Tait was penalised for delay of game at 15:09 and Taylor converted the resulting power play at 17:06 from Bean and Jurgens to make it 2-3. Nieminen added a fourth at 18:49 from Yamamoto and Naas, making it 2-4 with eleven seconds of the first period remaining. From 2-1 up Sheffield had conceded three goals in under eight minutes, and Dundee went into the break leading by two.
The Yamamoto-Naas-Nieminen triangle was central to Dundee's first-period surge — the same three players rotating through all three goals, with Yamamoto contributing assists on Naas's and Nieminen's goals and scoring his own.
Sheffield's second-period comeback — 3-4, 4-5, 5-5
The second period was equally extraordinary. Ritchie pulled one back at 21:52 from Southorn and Diffley to make it 3-4. Harper was penalised for slashing at 27:23 before Yamamoto scored on the power play at 27:58 — Naas and Nieminen assisting — to make it 3-5, seemingly putting Dundee in control. Sheffield then scored twice in 90 seconds: Diffley at 28:26 from Tremblay and McAdam to make it 4-5, and Heard at 33:57 from Cormier and Dougherty to level at 5-5. Jurgens was penalised for hooking at 36:54.
Five-five heading into the third period at Utilita. A 7,716 crowd that had been anticipating a Sheffield comfort win were instead watching an eleven-goal match — five apiece at the start of the third.
Third-period chaos — and a scoreless forty minutes
The third period produced no goals but significant drama. At 53:38, Heard accumulated four simultaneous penalties — fighting (five-minute major), instigator (ten-minute misconduct), instigator (two-minute minor), and interference (two-minute minor) — while Dundee's Luce received a five-minute fighting major and a 20-minute match penalty for third man in, and Boudens picked up roughing. Desouza added a cross-checking penalty at 57:35. Sheffield were significantly disadvantaged in terms of personnel remaining, but the third period ended scoreless at 5-5.
Overtime followed — the second overtime period across the EIHL and NIHL this weekend. Nieminen scored at 63:51 from Dow and Almquist — his second goal of the match and fifth point across a remarkable personal performance — to settle it for Dundee.
Yamamoto and Nieminen's remarkable nights
Yamamoto finished with two goals and two assists — directly involved in five of Dundee's six goals. Nieminen contributed a goal in the first period, an assist on Yamamoto's power play goal, and the overtime winner. Between them, the Yamamoto-Naas-Nieminen trio was involved in virtually every Dundee goal across the evening.
McAdam's assist on Diffley's 28:26 goal — the Sheffield goaltender picking up a point — is a footnote worth noting. Sheffield's goalkeeper contributing an assist as part of the comeback sequence reflects how completely this match was played end to end.
