Belfast Giants beat Glasgow Clan 1-0 at the SSE Arena on Saturday evening in the opening leg of their EIHL quarter-final, Nicolas Guay's goal at 58:02 - assisted by Irwin and Kawaguchi - the only score in a tight, disciplined match decided in the final two minutes. Jake Kupsky returned to the Belfast goal after being rested for the previous two league matches, and his clean sheet gives the Giants a first-leg advantage heading into the second leg at Braehead.

Both sides were penalised twice across the match - Teppo for high sticking in the first period, Lee for slashing in the second for Belfast, Messner for tripping in the second for Glasgow - but none were converted. The decisive goal was the only moment of separation in a match that had been level in every respect until Guay struck with less than two minutes remaining.

A goalless first and second - discipline and attrition

The first period was goalless despite Teppo being penalised for high sticking at 17:10. Neither side could find an opening in a match that reflected the intensity of play-off hockey - both teams defensive, structured, and unwilling to give the other space to work. The second period continued in the same vein. Lee was penalised for slashing at 25:52, Messner for tripping at 33:57, with both penalties killed without incident. Kupsky and Aittokallio both had excellent evenings in goal.

Guay wins it with 118 seconds remaining

The only decisive moment came when it had to. Guay scored at 58:02 - Irwin and Kawaguchi assisting - to give Belfast the lead they needed. With 118 seconds of the quarter-final remaining, Glasgow had no time to respond. The match ended 1-0 and Belfast take the series lead into the second leg.

It is a result that reflects the title-race quality Belfast have shown throughout the latter stages of the season. Winning a tight, one-goal play-off quarter-final at home, with their best goalkeeper back between the pipes, is exactly the kind of performance their season has been building towards.
