Swindon Wildcats extended their winning run to three matches with a 4-3 home win over Sheffield Steeldogs at the Better Link Centre on Saturday evening, Logan vande Meerakker the standout performer with two goals and two assists. The result was more comfortable than the final scoreline suggests for much of the match, but Watson's goal at 58:40 — with Sheffield playing an extra skater — set up a nervous final 80 seconds before Swindon saw it out.

For Swindon, three wins from three since the weekend before last represents their best run of the season and keeps their title challenge firmly on track. For Sheffield, who came into the match having won at Solway in overtime last Saturday, this is a seventh league defeat in their last ten.

A competitive first period — five goals in under twelve minutes

The match opened at pace. vande Meerakker gave Swindon the lead at 8:41 from Plews' assist before Sheffield responded with two goals in three minutes. Philips equalised at 16:21 — Shudra and Sommer assisting — and Larinmaa put the visitors ahead at 19:29 from Smith and Watson to lead 1-2 at the first break.

Six goals in the first period between the two sides, with Sheffield having come from behind to lead going into the break. Marr had been busy in the Swindon goal; Brady Parker was tested but steady for Sheffield.

vande Meerakker swings it — Villegas makes it safe

The second period belonged to Swindon. vande Meerakker scored at 22:49 — Villegas and Wells assisting — to level at 2-2, turning provider and scorer within the same period. It was the third time vande Meerakker had been directly involved in a goal and the period was barely three minutes old.

Villegas then scored early in the third period at 40:37 — vande Meerakker and Nell assisting — to give Swindon a 4-2 lead, and the match appeared to be heading towards a comfortable home win. Sheffield pushed hard through the third period, Watson's goal at 58:40 from Garcia and Ripley bringing it back to 4-3 with the goaltender already off the ice since 59:28. But they couldn't find an equaliser, and the 80-second window proved too short.

vande Meerakker's evening

vande Meerakker finished with two goals — the 1-1 equaliser and the 3-2 restore — and two assists on Nell's goal and Villegas' fourth. Across those four contributions he was involved in all but one of Swindon's goals, and his movement between scorer and assister roles makes the combination flexible and difficult to contain. He was comfortably the player of the match.

Form context

Swindon — W, W, L, OTL, OTW across their last five coming in — are now on W, W, W since the previous weekend, with back-to-back wins last weekend and this one. Their next two results will be critical for their title push.

Sheffield's form is a continued concern. The overtime win at Solway last Saturday was a positive, but they remain inconsistent away from home and will need more performances like the cup semi-final to justify their place in any top-four conversation.
