Hull Seahawks secured a hard-earned 4-3 away win at Planet Ice Peterborough on Saturday evening, Emil Švec scoring twice — both times with Corneil assisting — as the visitors edged a match that ebbed and flowed throughout and ended with both teams calling timeouts in the final 75 seconds.
The result extends Hull's impressive recent run to five wins from six and maintains the pressure on the sides above them in the table. For Peterborough, despite dominating in patches, they couldn't hold the lead they established in the second period and now face a difficult week having dropped points at home after Tuesday's 8-3 demolition of Milton Keynes.
Hull take early control — Peterborough respond
Hull moved ahead quickly at 2:29, Musil scoring from Stallard and Bonner's assists. Chilcot was penalised for cross-checking at 3:15 but Peterborough killed it, before Švec doubled Hull's advantage at 6:07 — Corneil and Crawley assisting — to lead 2-0 inside seven minutes. Haywood was penalised for tripping at 14:12 but again Peterborough's penalty kill held firm.
Ferrara pulled one back for Peterborough at 10:25 — Hough and Norton assisting — to make it 1-2 at the first break, keeping the hosts in the match despite a difficult opening seven minutes.
The lead changes hands — Hull respond again
The second period was where the match turned. Hough equalised for Peterborough at 21:53 — Ferrara and Laakkonen assisting — to level at 2-2, the Ferrara-Hough-Laakkonen triangle combining once more. Stallard was penalised for tripping at 23:22 giving Peterborough a power play they couldn't convert, and Hull hit back through Hodgkinson at 32:32 — Bruton and Kent assisting — to restore the lead at 3-2.
Offsetting holding penalties at 38:06 — Hehir (HUL) and Thorpe (PET) — cancelled each other out, and the second period ended 2-3 to Hull.
Kynaston levels — Švec wins it on the power play
Peterborough levelled again through Kynaston at 49:27 — Sari and Massie assisting — to make it 3-3 and set up a tense final period. Circenis was then penalised for hooking at 53:54, and Švec converted the resulting power play at 53:57 from Bonner and Corneil to give Hull a 4-3 lead — his second goal of the match, scored just three seconds after the penalty was called.
Peterborough pushed hard to level. They pulled Lavigne for an extra skater, called their timeout at 58:45, then went to the empty net again immediately. Hull called their own timeout at 59:16 to steady themselves. But Peterborough couldn't find a fifth goal, and Hull held on for a thoroughly deserved two points.
Švec, Corneil and Hull's depth
Švec's brace gives him a productive evening — both goals came with Corneil providing the primary or secondary assist, continuing the quiet but effective partnership between the two that has contributed across Hull's recent winning run. Heiskanen in the Hull goal was tested throughout but produced the saves when needed, particularly in the final minutes. Lavigne had little chance on any of Hull's four goals.
For Hull, five wins from six is a run that speaks for itself. The ability to absorb Peterborough's second-period equaliser and immediately respond with a third goal from Hodgkinson shows a squad with genuine character. The tight finish — both timeouts, empty net, the crowd on their feet — confirms this was earned rather than comfortable.
