Sheffield Steeldogs beat Romford Raiders 4-3 at Ice Sheffield on Friday evening in the opening match of the NIHL play-off semi-finals, surviving a remarkable Romford three-goal comeback in the third period that wiped out a 4-0 lead before Jonathan Philips scored the decisive fourth goal at 55:02 to restore Sheffield's advantage. Romford's frantic closing minutes - goalkeeper out at 58:28, back on, out again at 59:04, timeout at 59:43 - could not produce an equaliser.

Philips scored twice and Walker Sommer assisted three of Sheffield's four goals, making the Philips-Gendunov-Sommer triangle the central creative force of a match Sheffield dominated until the third period unravelled. For Romford, three goals in under four minutes to pull from 0-3 to 3-3 showed genuine resilience - but Philips's composure in response denied them.

A goalless first - Sheffield change goalkeeper at the break

A Coxhead 0-minute warning penalty at 39:33 preceded Gendunov scoring at 39:33 from Sommer and Philips - within the same moment - to make it 3-0. Baker was penalised for hooking at 23:16 in the second period without being converted; Doxey was penalised for interference at 33:24 without consequence. The second period ended 3-0 to Sheffield.
