Sheffield Steeldogs beat Peterborough Phantoms 3-1 at Ice Sheffield on Friday evening to take a significant step in the NIHL play-offs, Watson's goal after just 60 seconds setting up a match Sheffield controlled for long stretches despite Peterborough pulling level in the second period. Gendunov's empty net goal at 59:53 — with just seven seconds remaining — confirmed the result and sent the Steeldogs through.
It is a notable scalp for Sheffield. Peterborough had been one of the NIHL's most impressive sides in recent weeks, including last Sunday's 8-3 demolition of MK Lightning, and came into this play-off fixture as genuine contenders. Sheffield's resilience — particularly in a third period that saw Peterborough pull their goalkeeper twice and call a timeout in the final 51 seconds — reflects a squad capable of performing when the stakes are highest.
Watson puts Sheffield ahead in the first minute
Watson scored at 1:00 — Björkly-Nordström and Kirk assisting — to give Sheffield the fastest possible start. Lavigne in the Peterborough goal had barely had time to settle before the puck was past him. Norton was penalised for slashing at the start of the second period at 20:00, giving Sheffield a power play they couldn't convert, and the first period ended 1-0 to the home side.
Peterborough fight back — but Sheffield respond immediately
The second period was the most competitive. Ripley doubled Sheffield's lead at 30:40 — Steele and Watson assisting — before a cluster of Sheffield penalties placed them under pressure. Philips received two simultaneous high-sticking calls at 31:57, then Steele a delay of game at 35:49, giving Peterborough a sustained period in the box. McKenzie-Ahmed converted at 38:43 from Circenis and Foster to pull it back to 2-1 — the only goal Peterborough would score all evening.
Third period — Sheffield discipline, Peterborough's desperate finish
The third period opened with Phillips receiving an unsportsmanlike conduct at 43:08, and Hough's hooking at 43:45 in quick succession — two minutes apiece, partially overlapping. Sheffield killed both. Yates received a 10-minute misconduct for illegal equipment at 52:51, further draining the clock and compressing Peterborough's opportunities.
With the clock running out, Peterborough made their move. They pulled Lavigne at 58:41. Called their timeout at 59:09. Lavigne came back on at 59:09. Off again at 59:19. Then back on at 59:53 — simultaneously as Gendunov scored the empty net to make it 3-1 with seven seconds left. Four goalkeeper changes in 72 seconds, the frantic sequence of a side trying everything as time ran out.
Brady Parker in the Sheffield goal was solid throughout, conceding only once in 60 minutes and dealing cleanly with Peterborough's best efforts in the final period.
