Sheffield Steeldogs beat Peterborough Phantoms 4-7 at Planet Ice Arena on Sunday afternoon to complete a comprehensive play-off series win, adding to Friday's 3-1 first-leg victory with a dominant second-leg performance built on four power play goals. Cameron Hough scored a hat-trick for Peterborough — the third Sheffield opponent in a week to do so across these play-offs — but it wasn't enough as Sheffield's clinical conversion rate and the Ripley-Steele-Björkly-Nordström combination overpowered the home side.
Sheffield advance. Peterborough, who had scored first in each period on Friday only to be pegged back, are out. Robson picked up a 10-minute abuse of officials misconduct at the final buzzer — a familiar postscript to a play-off exit in this series.
The first period — lead changes twice, Sheffield ahead at the break
Sheffield took an early lead through Ripley at 1:56 — Steele assisting — before Hough levelled for Peterborough at 6:17 from Ferrara and Laakkonen. Garcia was penalised twice for Sheffield — tripping at 11:34 and roughing at 16:47 — before Hough scored his second at 18:49 from Laakkonen and Lawrence to give Peterborough a 2-1 lead with eleven seconds of the first period remaining.
The first period ended 2-1 to Peterborough — a reversal of Friday's opening period, when Sheffield had led 1-0 at the break.
The second period — Sheffield score four in seventeen minutes
The second period was the match. Laakkonen was penalised for hooking at 21:03, and Steele converted the resulting power play at 21:41 from Ripley and Björkly-Nordström — 1-1 in the Steele-Ripley assist relationship from Friday's game now extended into Sunday's. Sari was penalised for slashing at 25:40 — simultaneously as Sheffield pulled Parker for a tactical extra skater before immediately bringing him back — and Lavigne (goalkeeper) was penalised for roughing at 26:39, served by Glossop. Gendunov converted that power play at 26:39 from Larinmaa and Björkly-Nordström to make it 3-2 to Sheffield.
Peterborough called their timeout at 28:04, simultaneously as Philips scored Sheffield's third consecutive power play goal at 28:04 — Ripley and Gendunov assisting — to make it 4-2. Three power play goals in seven minutes. Hough pulled one back on the power play at 33:00 from Lawrence and Norton to make it 3-4, before Yates scored at 37:54 from Knaggs to restore Sheffield's two-goal cushion at 3-5.
Sheffield had scored four goals in under seventeen minutes of the second period, three of them on the power play. Larinmaa received two simultaneous penalties — GI and roughing — at 31:45, giving Peterborough a four-minute advantage that Hough converted to pull to 3-4.
Third period — Sheffield add two, Hough completes his hat-trick
Steele scored on the power play at 44:24 — Björkly-Nordström and Watson assisting — after McKenzie-Ahmed was penalised for boarding at 42:42. Peterborough went off the ice at 53:58 and Lavigne came on at 54:08, before Oksanen was penalised for interference at 54:08. Peterborough pulled Lavigne at 54:30 and he came back on at 55:45. Laakkonen scored on the power play at 56:00 from Lawrence and Ferrara to pull it to 4-6, but Björkly-Nordström scored at 58:19 from Ripley and Watson to seal the 4-7 result. Danečko was penalised for unsportsmanlike conduct at 58:47 before Robson received the 10-minute misconduct for abuse of officials at 60:00.
Sheffield win the series 3-1 and 7-4. They advance.
