Romford Raiders produced one of the most startling performances in the NIHL National Division this season, routing Leeds Knights 8-3 at Planet Ice Leeds on Saturday evening in a match that was effectively decided before twenty minutes were up. Six goals in the first period — four for Romford, two for Leeds — set a breathless pace that the home side simply couldn't sustain, and by the final whistle the visitors had comfortably their biggest away win of the campaign.

Tjay Anderson finished with two goals and multiple assists; Jake Sylvester contributed a brace; and the Osborn brothers — Austin and Dawson — were involved throughout, their names appearing across assists and a late goal to put the seal on a remarkable evening for the Essex side.

Six goals in the first period

The match opened at a ferocious pace. Kieran Brown put Leeds in front unassisted at 4:38, only for Adam Laishram to equalise for Romford at 7:08 with Anderson assisting. Sobchak restored Leeds' lead at 11:32 from Brown and Bissonnette — but from there, Romford took over completely.

Anderson scored at 13:25 — Laishram and Sylvester assisting — to make it 2-2. Danny Harrison was penalised for tripping at 16:17, and Anderson struck again at 19:05 from Laishram and Dawson Osborn to make it 3-2 to Romford with barely a minute of the period remaining. Power then made it 4-2 at 19:22 — Austin and Dawson Osborn assisting — with just 55 seconds separating those two Romford goals in a stunning end to the opening period.

Four goals, two in the final 55 seconds. Leeds trailed 2-4 at the break.

Johnston added Romford's fifth at 27:21 from Anderson's assist to open the second period, and with the score 2-5 the match was effectively over. Leeds managed to pull one back — Dunn's power play goal at 32:39 from Sobchak's assist making it 3-5 — but Sylvester immediately answered on the power play at 35:23 from Baker to push Romford back to a three-goal advantage at 3-6. Leeds' Samuel Cooper was penalised for holding at 34:37 and Power for high sticking at 35:43, giving each side a brief man advantage that added to the stop-start feel of a period full of penalties.

Sylvester scored his second of the night at 48:27 from Baker and Coxhead, and Austin Osborn completed the scoring at 48:47 — Tomalin and Dawson Osborn assisting — in a 20-second burst that brought up Romford's eighth goal and turned the third period into pure formality. Ewan Hill was penalised for hooking at 52:45 and Dunn for hooking at 43:40 and Sobchak for high sticking at 44:36 among the later penalties, but nothing changed the outcome.

Dan Norton in the Leeds goal had a night to forget, conceding eight behind a defence that offered little resistance once the first period opened up. Cole Ceci in the Romford net was comfortable throughout.

Context and significance

For Romford, this is their biggest win of the season and only their second victory in four — but what a statement win it is. The Anderson-Laishram combination was devastating in the first period, and the Osborn brothers' contribution across the scoresheet underlines a depth of talent that has perhaps been underestimated. Two wins from two this week — Saturday's win at Basingstoke on Saturday last week, the OT win at Basingstoke on Sunday, and now this — leaves Romford with genuine momentum.

For Leeds, this is a sobering end to a week that began with Tuesday's cup semi heroics at Sheffield — coming from 4-2 down to force overtime before losing to the Steeldogs 5-4. The contrast between that performance and this league result is stark, and the 1,864 home crowd at Elland Road will have left with serious concerns.
