Telford Tigers produced one of the most explosive first periods in the NIHL National Division this season, scoring seven goals in twenty-two minutes to overwhelm Basingstoke Bison at the Silverdome Arena on Saturday evening. Thomson's opener at just 41 seconds set the tone, and despite Basingstoke scoring three of their own in the same period, Telford were already out of sight by the time the first intermission arrived.

The final score — 5-8 — disguises how completely the match was decided by 22:00. A Basingstoke goalkeeper change at 27:08, both sides producing shorthanded goals, and a match-ending altercation that earned Shankar a 20-minute match penalty at 59:56 all added drama to what was, in terms of the result, a straightforward away win for Telford.

Nine goals before the first break

The first period was remarkable by any measure. Thomson gave Telford the lead at 0:41 — Henderson and Newell assisting — before Shankar levelled for Basingstoke at 5:22 from Cathcart and Spadafora. McKenzie restored Telford's lead at 8:07 from Shudra and Fielder, then Fugalis was penalised for tripping at 8:45, giving Basingstoke a power play that Shankar converted at 9:46 — Sellan and Spadafora assisting — to level at 2-2.

From there, Telford took complete control. Shudra made it 3-2 at 13:17 from Aston and McKenzie, P. Brown added a fourth at 14:50 from McPhee and Mather, and Sampford pulled one back for Basingstoke at 15:25 from Milton and Relf. McKenzie then scored his second of the period at 15:50 from Rose and Aston, and Harry Ferguson completed the first-period assault at 17:41 from P. Brown and K. Ferguson to make it 6-3 at 17:41.

Fielder added a seventh at 21:50 from H. Ferguson and P. Brown — nine goals in under 22 minutes, seven of them to Telford — and the first break arrived with a 3-7 scoreline that ended the match as a contest.

Both goalkeepers changed, both sides score shorthanded

The second period saw Basingstoke pull their starter at 27:08 with Ben Clarke-Leach coming on, before Aston was penalised for elbowing at 27:16. Harry Ferguson was penalised for tripping at 34:23 before Harding scored Basingstoke's fourth on the power play at 36:03 — Sellan and Milton assisting — at the same moment Telford brought on Brad Day to replace Ben Norton in goal. The match had its fourth goalkeeper of the evening.

Henderson then scored shorthanded for Telford at 38:06 — Fielder and Thomson assisting — immediately after Harry Ferguson was penalised for cross-checking at 36:37. Both penalties producing shorthanded goals in the same period underlines how frequently momentum swings can happen even in a match whose outcome felt decided before the second period started.

Third period and a match-ending flashpoint

Basingstoke's fifth came from Milton shorthanded at 54:48 — Sellan and Mogg assisting — after Stead's holding penalty at 53:56, making it 5-8 with the Bison at least ending with some pride. The match closed with a flashpoint at 59:56 when Shankar was penalised for slew footing — both a 2-minute minor and a 20-minute match penalty — alongside roughing calls on Fugalis and H. Ferguson for Telford. A heated end to an already chaotic evening.

For Telford, who had lost three in a row coming in, this is a much-needed and emphatic response. McKenzie's brace and the first-period dominance showed the attacking depth that had been absent in recent matches. For Basingstoke, a third heavy defeat in recent weeks — including last week's 4-9 loss to Swindon — raises genuine questions as the season approaches its final stages.
