Bristol Pitbulls produced one of the most dramatic late charges of the season at Planet Ice Bristol on Saturday evening, scoring twice in the final 73 seconds to close to 5-6 — only to fall short against Leeds Knights, who had built a commanding early lead and survived everything Bristol threw at them in the closing stages.

Leeds led 3-0 after the first period, 5-2 after 46 minutes, and looked to be cruising. But Bricknell's power play goal at 51:45, Lipsey's strike at 58:47, and Bricknell's second unassisted at 59:35 — with Bristol having already called their timeout — made for a nerve-shredding final minute. The net went empty at 59:52 and Leeds barely held on for a 6-5 result that kept their own timeout firmly in their pocket.

A remarkable first period — Leeds score three, one of them shorthanded with a man in the box

Leeds had two goals on the board inside four minutes. Spawforth opened at 2:05 from Perre's assist, and Bradon doubled the lead at 3:36 from Sobchak and Brown. Then Kieran Brown was penalised for interference at 7:27 — a five-minute major — and Bristol had a lengthy power play to claw back into the match.

Instead, Leeds scored shorthanded. Vengis converted at 9:04 from Endicott and Cooper while Brown was still serving his major, to make it 3-0. Scoring a shorthanded goal while killing a five-minute penalty is a statement of defensive composure and counter-attacking quality rarely seen at this level. Bristol, despite their sustained advantage, could not convert any of it.

The first period ended 0-3 to the visitors. A Leeds goalkeeper change at the start of the second period saw Dan Norton replace Sam Gospel.

Bristol fight back — Leeds respond twice

The second period brought Bristol back into the match. Butler scored on the power play at 22:52 — Batch and Dunbar assisting — after Neely's hooking penalty at 21:13, making it 1-3. But Leeds scored twice in 34 seconds: Peyton at 25:42 from Endicott and Dunn, and Brown at 26:16 from Bradon, to restore a four-goal cushion at 1-5. Bristol pulled one back through Hamill at 34:48 — Harewood assisting — after McGill's hooking penalty at 32:32 which Leeds killed. The second period ended 3-5 to Leeds.

Brown's third — then Bristol's extraordinary finish

Brown completed his hat-trick at 46:24 in the third period from Sobchak and Bradon to make it 6-3, and the match appeared comfortable. Vengis was then penalised for tripping at 51:18, and Bricknell converted the power play at 51:45 — Butler and Harewood assisting — to make it 4-6. Harewood was penalised for boarding at 52:11 but Leeds killed it without conceding.

With just over a minute remaining, Lipsey scored at 58:47 from Dunbar and Bricknell to make it 5-6. Bristol called their timeout at 59:35 and Bricknell immediately scored unassisted — 5-6, 25 seconds left, net empty from 59:52. It wasn't enough, and Leeds saw it out for a vital two points.

Brown, Bradon and the triangles that decided it

Kieran Brown finished with three goals and one assist — a hat-trick that included Bradon assisting twice and Sobchak contributing on the third. Bradon himself scored once and assisted twice, the Bradon-Brown-Sobchak triangle combining for four of Leeds' six goals. Bricknell's brace in the final 73 seconds gave Bristol late hope but couldn't change the outcome.

For Leeds, three wins from four and this result — from 3-0 up and nearly surrendering it — shows character as much as quality. For Bristol, scoring twice in the final 73 seconds from 3-6 down shows that this side never stops competing, even when the outcome looks settled.
