Leeds Knights produced a much-needed response to Saturday's 8-3 hammering at Romford with a controlled 4-2 away win at Telford Ice Rink on Sunday afternoon. Three goals without reply between 23:47 and 29:16 transformed a 1-1 match into a comfortable lead that Telford, despite pulling their goalkeeper in the final three minutes, could not recover from.
For Leeds, who had looked shell-shocked by Saturday's result, this is a win that steadies the ship. For Telford, a second consecutive defeat after Saturday's overtime loss at Bristol ends their weekend on a sour note, and they will be frustrated having led from the fourth minute.
Thomson puts Telford in front early
Thomson opened the scoring at 3:41 from Henderson's assist — the same combination that had contributed throughout Telford's weekend — to give the home side an early advantage. The first period ended 1-0 to Telford, with Leeds yet to register despite reasonable possession. Dan Norton in the Leeds goal was tested without being seriously troubled.
Leeds turn it around in five minutes
The second period was the match. Sobchak equalised for Leeds at 23:47 unassisted, and Newell immediately restored Telford's lead at 24:48 — Henderson and Thomson assisting in the same combination as the opener, with the roles inverted — to make it 2-1 within a minute of the equaliser.
Leeds then scored three in 4 minutes and 35 seconds to take control. Cooper levelled at 28:41 from Endicott and Pakozdi, Brown scored at 29:16 from Bissonnette and Bennett to make it 3-2, and Brown struck again at 38:26 from Bissonnette and Vengis to seal a 4-2 lead going into the third period. Both Brown goals carried Bissonnette's assist — a consistent contribution from a player who ended the evening with two helpers.
Third period — Telford's late push comes too late
The third period produced two Leeds penalties — Pakozdi for high sticking at 40:37 and Cooper for cross-checking at 51:50 — but Telford couldn't convert either opportunity. They pulled Ben Norton for an extra skater at 57:15 and called their timeout at 58:16, but the extra pressure produced nothing, and Leeds held on to take the two points.
The 4-2 scoreline is a fair reflection of the second period's dominance, even if Telford were competitive for long stretches either side of it.
Coming in on a 3-8 defeat the night before, Leeds' ability to produce a disciplined away performance at Telford demonstrates something of the squad's resilience. Sobchak's unassisted equaliser started the comeback, and Brown's two goals — his third and fourth of the weekend across the two matches — give him a productive if bittersweet weekend overall.
Telford end the weekend with two defeats in two after a promising run of three wins in three before Saturday. The Henderson-Thomson combination was their consistent attacking threat throughout both matches but couldn't produce enough to prevent the weekend going wrong.
