Peterborough Phantoms avenged Saturday's defeat to Swindon with an emphatic 8-3 home win over Milton Keynes Lightning at Planet Ice Peterborough on Sunday afternoon, scoring seven goals across the second and third periods after a scoreless first period. Janne Laakkonen finished with a hat-trick and four assists for a remarkable individual evening, while MK's Patrik Forsberg accumulated three separate penalties — a delay of game, an unsportsmanlike conduct misconduct, and a later cross-checking minor — as the visitors' discipline fell apart at exactly the wrong time.
A goalless first — then chaos
The first period produced no goals despite a succession of MK penalties. Martelly was penalised for tripping at 12:37, Laakkonen simultaneously for high sticking, Spadafore for cross-checking at 16:36, and Forsberg for hooking at 19:30. Neither side converted their power plays, and the period ended 0-0 with tensions visibly rising.
Five goals in twenty minutes — MK's second period falls apart
The second period opened with Gabaj's roughing penalty at 20:00 leading directly to Laakkonen's opening power play goal at 20:33 — Lawrence and Norton assisting. MK hit back through Norris at 23:40 from Gabaj and Rutkis, before Peterborough swept into a dominant sequence.
Clarke-Pizzo scored at 34:16 from Robson and Circenis to make it 2-1. Then MK's discipline shattered entirely. Norris was penalised for interference at 35:50, before Forsberg received a delay of game minor and a 10-minute misconduct simultaneously at 36:17 — served by Thomas — handing Peterborough an extended power play window. They scored twice in quick succession: Laakkonen at 36:50 from Hough and Lawrence, and Lawrence immediately at 37:16 from Laakkonen and Ferrara to make it 4-1.
Hough added a fifth at 39:27 — Ferrara and Laakkonen assisting — before the second period ended. Salisbury pulled one back for MK at 32:15 from Jokinen and Spadafore to give the score a slightly different complexion, but Peterborough led 5-2 going into the final period.
Third period seals it — Ferrara, Laakkonen, Forsberg again
The third period continued in the same vein. Hough scored her second at 40:32 on the power play — Laakkonen and Ferrara assisting — after Spadafore's roughing at 40:00. Ferrara then scored at 43:31 from Hough and Laakkonen to make it 7-2.
MK's discipline problems persisted: Massie was penalised for hooking at 46:26, Thorpe for interference at 47:05, Gulliver for interference at 48:43. Rutkis scored MK's third at 51:11 before Forsberg was penalised again — high sticking at 54:15 (served by Field), followed by Spadafore's abuse of officials at 54:18 for a 10-minute misconduct, and Forsberg's cross-checking at 54:34. Laakkonen completed the scoring on the power play at 56:15 from Hough and Ferrara to seal the 8-3 final scoreline.
The Laakkonen-Hough-Ferrara triangle
What makes Peterborough's performance so cohesive is the degree to which six of their eight goals flow through the same three players. Laakkonen, Hough and Ferrara each score twice and each assist on multiple goals — the combination rotating so that each player scores with the other two assisting, in every possible configuration across the evening. It is an unusual display of mutual understanding and clinical execution from a home side that needed a response after Saturday's loss at Swindon.
For MK, Forsberg's evening will be remembered for the wrong reasons. Three separate penalties — and Spadafore's misconduct alongside him — handed Peterborough the power play opportunities that turned a competitive first period into a rout. Will Kerlin in the MK goal couldn't be blamed for the goals given the circumstances; Lavigne was barely tested in the first period and then overwhelmed as the second began.
