heffield Steeldogs are through to the Planet Ice NIHL National Cup final after one of the most dramatic second-leg nights Ice Sheffield has seen in recent memory. Bair Gendunov's overtime winner at 64:49 settled a tie that had lurched in every direction across two legs, with the Steeldogs advancing 7-6 on aggregate after a tie that finished 4-5 on the night.
The match will be remembered primarily for what happened between 56:24 and 59:56 — a four-minute passage in which Leeds Knights twice scored to haul themselves from 4-2 down to 4-4, drawing level with just four seconds on the clock through Liam Peyton. It was a remarkable comeback. It just wasn't quite enough.
A competitive first period
Leeds drew first blood at 3:33 through Owen Sobchak, Liam Peyton assisting, and the visitors had their early foothold. Sheffield equalised at 11:27 through Kyle Watson from Ivan Björkly-Nordström's pass, only for Finley Bradon to restore Leeds' lead at 16:08 with Sobchak turning provider. The period ended 2-1 to Leeds.
A holding penalty for Nathan Ripley at 14:07 had given Leeds a brief opportunity earlier in the period that went unpunished, while Bailey Perre's delay of game at 8:09 had done the same for Sheffield. Both sides were testing the other without fully breaking through.
The second period saw no goals, but several opportunities created by penalties. Björkly-Nordström was penalised for interference at 25:15, Ben Morgan for tripping at 33:05, and Finley Bradon for hooking at 33:29 — none of the man advantages converting. Gendunov was sent off for cross-checking at 39:33 as Sheffield finished the period in the box, but Leeds couldn't capitalise.
The third period transformed the match. Sommer scored at 51:14 from Gendunov and Philips — Sheffield's first lead of the night and a significant moment given the aggregate context. A bench minor for too many men at 52:49 handed Leeds a power play; Sobchak converted at 54:30 from Endicott and Neely to equalise at 3-3 and send the Steeldogs bench scrambling.
Then Shudra scored unassisted at 56:24 to put Sheffield back in front. It seemed like that might just be enough to see them through. Leeds disagreed.
At 57:42, Leeds pulled Sam Gospel and pushed forwards. Sheffield called their timeout at 57:54. It didn't help — Dunn scored immediately at 57:54 from Peyton and Bissonnette to make it 4-4 on the night — and then Gospel went back on at 57:54 before being pulled again at 59:34 as Leeds gambled everything with 26 seconds left. Peyton finished at 59:56, Dunn and Bissonnette assisting, to make it 4-4 and force overtime with four seconds remaining on the clock.
The Steeldogs would have been stunned. Gospel came back on for Leeds at 59:56 as overtime approached.
Gendunov finishes it
In overtime, there was to be one more twist. Gendunov — who had spent time in the sin bin earlier in the third period — scored unassisted at 64:49 to win the tie 5-4 on the night and 7-6 on aggregate. It was a fitting conclusion: the player who caused one of the evening's key penalty moments had the final word.
For Leeds, a heartbreaking exit having led for much of the match and scored twice in the final four minutes to drag it to overtime. For Sheffield, a hard-won place in the National Cup final — earned the hard way.
Goaltenders Brady Parker (SHS) and Sam Gospel (LEE) both had eventful evenings, with Gospel's repeated withdrawals in the closing minutes a reflection of just how desperate Leeds' situation had become.
