Sheffield Steeldogs ended a run of four successive league defeats with a 5-4 overtime win at Dumfries Ice Bowl on Saturday evening, CJ Garcia scoring just six seconds into the extra period from Brady Doxey's assist to give the visitors a result that had looked uncertain for much of the match.

The two sides were level at 4-4 heading into overtime after a third period filled more with penalties than goals — six minors across the final twenty minutes including two roughing incidents at 50:19 and 50:57 — and Sheffield's two-goal second-period lead had been wiped out by Solway's power play conversions at 36:58 and 41:30. In the end, Garcia had the final word barely moments after the puck dropped in overtime.

Solway open, Sheffield take control

Carruth opened the scoring unassisted for Solway at 1:32 inside two minutes to give the home side an early advantage. Sheffield responded before the first break: Steele scored at 17:45 from Watson and Doxey, and Ripley equalised at the start of the second period at 20:37 from Larinmaa and Gendunov to make it 2-1 to Sheffield.

Yantsis pulled Solway level at 23:49 — Buesa and Beattie assisting — before Sheffield moved back in front through two power play goals in quick succession. Hodge's hooking penalty at 25:21 led to Larinmaa scoring at 25:55 — Sommer and Garcia assisting — and Carruth's cross-checking at 28:09 gave Sheffield another chance that Gendunov converted at 29:59 from Garcia and Watson. Sheffield led 4-2 at the half-hour mark with their power play having done the damage.

Smith was penalised for tripping at 35:34 and Arseneau punished Sheffield on the power play at 36:58 — Buesa and Yantsis assisting — to make it 4-3. Then Oksanen's holding penalty at 39:40 led to Yantsis' second of the night on the power play at 41:30 — Stewart and Buesa helping — to level at 4-4 just over a minute into the third period. Sheffield's bench minor for too many men at 42:49 compounded what had been a difficult opening to the final period.

From there, the match became fractious. Roughing calls at 50:19 — Stenton (SOL) and Watson (SHS) — were followed by two minors for Danečko at 50:57 alongside Boyd's roughing for Solway, all resulting in offsetting penalties that cancelled each other out. Garcia was penalised for tripping at 55:40, Arseneau for holding at 55:51, and then further offsetting roughing calls — Beattie (SOL) and Ripley (SHS) — arrived at 58:39 with barely a minute remaining. Neither side could find a winner in regulation.

Garcia settles it in six seconds

Overtime lasted barely a blink. Garcia scored at 60:06 — just six seconds in — from Doxey's assist to complete Sheffield's comeback and hand the visitors two vital points. It is a notable result for a side still riding the high of Tuesday's cup semi-final win, but navigating difficult league form alongside it.

For Solway, whose last five league results show four defeats and an overtime loss, this is a match they will feel they should have won given they led twice and converted two power plays to level in the third period. Their power play was the standout positive in an otherwise difficult run.
